Working with your counselor

Your counselor can be one of the most important resources in high school (9. º -12. Grade). He or she will assist you with planning for college and career, your personal plan for four years of high school, as well as individual concerns you may have. Do not be afraid to ask individuals conference. The following are examples of topics that you may want to discuss with your counselor.

9. Grade:

  • discuss your ideas for your four-year individual plan based on your goals after graduation – university, community college, advanced training, military or career.
  • Ask about selected programs at your high school.
  • Ask about extra-curricular activities such as clubs or organizations.
  • Ask about summer programs, including summer school, work-study programs, and volunteer opportunities.

10. Grade:

  • Review your transcript. Ensure you’re aware for graduation and enrolled in the appropriate classes.
  • Ask about special programs and AP classes.
  • Ask about careers related programs and special programs ROC within your individual school.
  • Ask about summer programs for academic enrichment or remediation, work experience, service learning, travel / study, etc..

11. Grade:

  • Review your transcript. Ensure you’re aware for graduation and enrolled in the appropriate classes.
  • Discuss the results of the ASVAB. Browse career goals.
  • Discuss test scores and register for the ACT, SAT I and II. Discuss test preparation.
  • Ask for advice and resources for schools, universities and other specialized training.

12. Grade:

  • Review your academic record in the fall. Ensure that you will complete all graduation requirements and are enrolled in the appropriate classes.
  • Discuss test dates to ensure you have completed all the requirements to be eligible for higher studies.
  • Discuss applications for colleges, vocational training opportunities, scholarships, financial aid and more.
  • Create a resume of your activities for your high school counselor. This will help with letters of recommendation.
