School Policies

Student Dress Code & Electronic Devices Policy


The West High campus is closed, and students may not leave for any reason during the school day.

  • Parents who pick up their students during regular school hours must sign them out at the attendance office BEFORE students leave campus. Failure to do so will result in a “cut.”

  • Off-campus lunch passes will NOT be granted.


All students at West High are expected to be on their best behavior at all times. A referral may be written for any student who disrupts the classroom, defies authority or violates school rules.

  • The Dean’s office will determine the appropriate disciplinary action, which may include detention, suspension, expulsion and/or removal from extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs, or school events.


West High has a Zero-Tolerance policy for graffiti. Students who possess “Sharpies” or other markers are subject to disciplinary action, including expulsion. Parents and students will be held responsible for the cost of removal.


Bike racks are provided for students to lock their bikes; however, students park and lock their bikes at their own risk. Bicycles, skateboards, or rollerblades are not permitted on campus.


Cell phones are allowed on campus; however, they must be off and out of sight during the school day – including lunch and before school. No other electronic devices, including iPods, MP3 players, ear buds (earpieces) and cameras are allowed on campus. Electronic devices will be confiscated and returned to parent or guardian only during regular school hours.


To ensure a quality education, West High students are expected to be in class on time, every day. Please call the Attendance Office to clear your student’s absence at A-K 832-2938   L-Z 832-2863.

  • A student is “tardy” if not in class when the tardy bell rings. Excessive tardies will result in discipline.

  • If a student is absent, the parent/guardian must call to clear the absence within 72 hours, or a “cut” will be issued. Once a cut is issued, it cannot be changed. Students who “cut” will receive disciplinary action. 


  • Student dress should be appropriate for the learning environment and any school-sponsored activity. Students are not permitted to wear:

  • “Spaghetti” straps, see-through, strapless or backless garments, midriffs, low-cut tops or dresses , tube-tops, halters, or similar types of clothing

  • Undergarments cannot be visible.

  • Short skirts, shorts or spandex that are too revealing.

  • Excessively baggy clothing or sagging pants (Pants are to be worn at the waist.)

  • Tank tops, mesh tanks, or muscle shirts.

  • Any clothing, accessory, or backpack which displays alcohol, tobacco products, drugs, gang affiliations, sexual content or offensive language.

  • Any clothing or adornment that is distracting or potentially unsafe (i.e. sharp objects, safety pins, metal studs, wallet chains)

  • Any footwear inappropriate for normal activities (including bedroom slippers or moccasins)

  • Head coverings, bandanas, or hair nets.

  • Only West High hats are allowed on campus. Hats must be removed when entering classrooms and offices. All other hats are not permitted on campus. Any confiscated hats will be returned to parents only.


  • Our school Electronics Policy is as follows:

    Cell Phones and other electronic devices (i.e. IPODS, MP3, CD players, personal cameras, etc.) must be turned off and out of sight once the tardy bell rings for class and until class is dismissed.  It is up to the discretion of the teacher when electronic devices may be used as an educational tool.  Students refusing to put their electronic device away or who are abusing the electronics policy are exhibiting defiance and will be taken to the Dean’s Office for disciplinary action.

    Consequences for Electronic Defiance


    1.    1.     First Violation:  After school detention for defiance, parent/guardian contacted.

      1. Second Violation:  Two after school detentions, parents/guardian contacted.

      2. Third Violation:  Student is taken to Dean of Student’s office for further disciplinary action.



    Student Responsibility for Electronics

    West High School is NOT RESPONSIBLE for any lost, damaged, or stolen cell phones, iPods, iPads, MP3 players or any other electronic device.  Students are encouraged to keep their electronic device with them at all times.  Devices should be off and away during class unless otherwise instructed.
