FAQs For Parents & Students

What are the benefits of Forensics?

The benefits of Forensics are life-long. Students will learn how to research, evaluate research, present evidence, and debate using critical thinking skills. Students will compete in an academic setting where they will be expected to argue solely on evidence alone. Students who compete in speech events will also learn how to write, prepare speeches, and present to an audience. These skills will be based in performance, persuasion, or information.

What kind of credits does this class offer?

Forensics will be a class during the school day. This class will be offered as a Performing Art Elective. This will meet A-G requirements.

Do I have to attend the competitions?

Yes. Students will be expected to attend a majority of the competitions on the tournament list. They will be required to compete in at least two debate competitions (not including the Novice tournament at the beginning of the year), and one speech competition. Remember, students will get as much out of this class as they are willing to put in. The most success comes from practice and attending competitions.

How far can I go with these tournaments?

In addition to regional competitions, students will have a chance to go to State Qualifying Tournaments and National Qualifying Tournaments. If students qualify in speech, debate, or both, we will travel to the State and/or National competitions where they will compete against hundreds of other students.

What do I get if I win?

You get a huge trophy!!! You also win so much more. You win confidence, personal growth, and an opportunity to learn from other competitors.

What can I do with this after high school?

Like most national academic programs, Forensics has a huge following at the collegiate level. In addition to hundreds of college programs, there are also over 180 college scholarships offered across the United States that are directly tied to the National Speech & Debate Association. There are hundreds more offered by individual colleges as well.
