The Kern High School District Board Dress Code Policy prohibits any manner of dress or appearance that interferes with the education or rights of others, causes substantial disorder, violates common decency, or includes profanity and/or material that is offensive. Clothing, jewelry, and personal items shall be free of writing, pictures, or any insignia which is vulgar, lewd, obscene, profane, or sexually suggestive or which promotes the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or other illegal activity. Clothing must cover the body from the top of one armpit laterally across the chest to the other armpit down to mid thigh. All tops must have straps. Undergarments must not be visible, and see-through, revealing, or mesh garments must not be worn. Appropriate shoes must be worn at all times. Clothing must not state, imply, or depict hate speech or imagery targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, or any other protected class. Tattoos must be covered up with pants and/or a long sleeve shirt if they portray profanity, drugs/alcohol, materials that would be deemed offensive and/or gang-related. Students are to remove baseball caps, visors, or head-coverings while indoors.
ELECTRONICS POLICY
Students may use mobile communication devices on campus during non-instructional time as long as the device is utilized in accordance with the law and any District or school rules. However, mobile communication devices shall be turned off during instructional time unless there is an emergency/threat of danger, the student is given permission from a teacher or administrator, the student has a doctor's note determining the possession/use of the phone is necessary for the student’s health and well-being, or when the phone is required by the student’s individualized education plan. Students who violate the electronics policy will be subject to disciplinary action possibly including parental or guardian pick up of devices from the Dean’s Office. The district will not be responsible for a student's mobile communication device which is brought on campus or to a school activity and is lost, stolen, or damaged.
ONLINE REPORTING
The Kern High School District and West High School has integrated Spriego, a 24/7 anonymous reporting system available for all stakeholders including parents, students, and community members. Spriego can be accessed from the West High School homepage by clicking on Spriego School Safety Tip Line at the top of the page. Any item that threatens the safety of the student may be reported via the database. Once the report is completed a school site Administrator will receive an email with the information to follow up on the report.
